Comics anyone?

Postby celine » Wed Nov 18, 2009 7:06 am

Wondering how may comic book readers there are out there and the various 'flavors' of comics/graphic novels people enjoy.

some images of my favorites. Garth Ennis is a great writer, and 'Preacher' and 'The Pro' are two favorites. (Both)Very witty, grotesque, creative and hard to put down. Then there's the new 'Joker' graphic novel that came out a while back. Very, very well done, dark and intricate. My favorite interpretation of the Joker so far. And then there is Locke and Key; a fun, dark mind-fuck with beautiful illustrations.

So that's just to name a few. Curious what you guys like

gotta love the classics. I remember some of those. If you like dark comedy and witty, imaginative plots and characters, then you should read Garth Ennis. He is truly a genius. They were going to make an HBO series of 'Preacher', but it supposedly was too violent and controversial, even for HBO.

Hehe, I actually own that Preacher Comic in the first post.
My collecting days are pretty much over - I used to read/collect SPAWN and the side series/special editions (Curse of the Spawn, Spawn - Medievel Ages, Blood Feud, Spawn Vs Batman etc.) for quite a long time.

Besides that, I've read a bit of Spiderman, Batman, The Tenth, Evil Ernie :D , Preacher and so forth...it'd be interesting to know what my collection is worth nowadays (not that I'd sell it, tho)
At the moment, I'm reading "Monsieur Madigras among Bones" by Éric Liberge. I came across the first volume in a comic store, liked the artwork, bought it and liked the story as well. They're pretty expensive (at least for someone who doesn't have much money), but it's only four volumes alltogether ( I think I'm gonna buy Volume 4 today, actually)

The cool comics were taken off the shelf just as I was getting into them, so I never really became a comic reader. I would probably have a lot of Spawn comics if that didn't happen, that shit was overpoweringly awesome as a ~9 year old.

Garth Ennis is good, yeah. Not one to be taken too seriously, I catch up on his newer comic "The Boys" a little now and then. My favourite comic, well.. gonna be boring here

My favourite comic author is without a doubt Tsutome Nihei. His comics in the Blame! universe are fantastic. Giger-esque character designs, a lot of attention spent on the architecture (the author was once an architect) and a bafflingly huge world with a story spanning millenia. Just look at this shit.
He also made a Wolverine comic titled "Snikt!", I haven't checked that one out yet.

Is that thing by Éric Liberge only available in German? Looked pretty sweet.

What the hell happened? I'm sure I already wrote and posted here, but now it's not there...

Anyway, I've read a lot of stuff like Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Alan Moore's Watchmen, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Lost Girls, Bill Willingham's Fables, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, and so on. I also like some of the finnish comics artists like Ville Ranta, Pauli Kallio, Ville Pirinen, Mari Ahokoivu, etc. but I'm going to be an individual and different from all of you and not post pictures of book covers. Also, I'm too lazy to google them :D

It's also available in french ;). I've only checked amazon (.de and co.uk), but they don't sell an english version.

Now,Not at all for 4-5 years-lack of interest and poor value for the ever rising cost meant comics got the ax.I still have boxes of older ones i like a lot though.

Love the retro stuff. But, yes, a lot of the stuff they got away with back then would never fly in these days.

I love Watchmen, too. But I didn't care for the movie. It lacked a lot of the detail that made the book so special. They left out quite a bit.

The Boys is a fun series. Love that Wee Hughie looks like Simon Pegg. Very fitting.

Never heard of Monsieur Madigras among Bones. Looks interesting. Sorry, this is probably a dumb question, but what language is in written in?

Tsutome Nihei's stuff looks pretty creative. Is that some kind of many-eyed demon eating everyone?
