Good Books

Postby Aldhissla » Sun Oct 25, 2009 1:50 pm

(keeps on reanimating classic threads)
Don't have much to time to read atm, thus I'm still reading "Life, the Universe and everything", the third part of the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe" series by Douglas Adams. I had started to read in in german some years ago...and then stopped halfway through it - for no apparent reason, since the translation was done very well imo. Now I'm reading it in english, and I'm not going to fail this time.
Still to this day
I can hear the whistle blow
I can smell the sage burn
I may be as old and stubborn as a pine
But I am just as wild as the young.

Adams is great. :D
I'm reading the third part of Song of ice and fire by George Martin - Storm of swords. I must say i didn't expect much with Martin, i thought it will be only a cheap version of 'Tolkien meets Rowling' or something, but it's turning up pretty damn awesome. I just hope he finishes it (he promised 7 titles).

Always being interested in new conspiracy theories, i'm on Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol now. It's quite entertaining, but probably full of bullshit again. I've taken to read his books with the computer next to me, questioning and researching about every single one of his claims :)

I've just read H.P. Lovecraft's Charles Dexter Ward's Case, and it charmed me totally. So, it means, that I must read 'em all mwuaha. Also, The Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings is one of my best books so far, I really recom it.

I haven't read Charles Dexter Ward's Case yet, but I've heard people say it's great. Must try it some time. As for Lovecraft's other works: I am here and there reading his short stories. I usually love the theme and the ideas he has, but he - IMO - can't finish a story properly. He seems to develop a very scary scene every time but later doesn't know what to do with it. There are some stories that are pure brilliance, tho.

I'm ATM reading a funny book called All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Watching Star Trek by Dave Marinaccio. The author connects various scenes from Star Trek with scenes from real life and pulls out the wisdom of Star Trek. Great read for having a good time, even if you don't know much about Star Trek.

I am looking forward to diving in to The Red Book by Carl Jung.
I am a casual Jungian-by casual i mean i read and interpret on my own with no formal teaching of it,and have a very incomplete 'have read' list of his writing.Since this supposedly lays bare very personal self examination,I will find it interesting to see how deeply he went into himself to form his theories.
it's just another in a lifetime's worth of lessons never learned

I saw some clips with him at various conventions. All I saw was him not writing a god damn book. He was a lot faster with the earlier books, now he wants to make money by doing convention appearances, board games, CCG:s, TV-series etc. etc. FINISH. THE FUCKING. STORY.

At least he hasn't died yet, the fantasy series I read before Song of Ice and Fire failed on that part.

My thoughts exactly.

And LOL on the "at least he hasn't died yet", i'm always saying that i hope he manages to finish it, since he is getting quite old ... as morbid as that sounds, i guess. :D

I'm still trying to get the fourth part od Song of ice and fire, and a book called Gomorra, about Italian mob, impossible to get around here, it's always taken in the libraries ...
