So I'm back from Wacken and yeah, what can I say? It was great fucking fun as always. And for the first time in years, it didn't seem to have grown. Maybe even less people this year than last. We were able to step forward to the front of the crowd at Ozzy, Priest and several other big acts without hassle and even had still enough room to stand at ease. A trend that may continue!
What shouldn't continue tho is the commercialization of the thing. This really gets worse every year and it kinda spoils the fun when you're drinking at the campsite with your friends and get harassed by ice-cream vendors every couple of minutes. "Hello want ice?" Think of them bums trying to sell you roses in rock bars while you're trying to chat up a girl. Retarded shit. And what the hell is up with Nintendo having a stand at a metal fest? And insurance companies blaring their ads over the yells of the crowd on the big screens next to the stages?
Not to mention prices. For the germans in here: Have you ever eaten a Leberkäsbrötchen that cost you a fiver? I was tempted to do so cause I thought this might be my only chance to get one that expensive.
But apart from all that, it was yet again a weekend to remember. My tenth Wacken anniversary, and I celebrated it in style. 20 beers a day not counting schnaps, 3 pouches of tobacco in 4 days, saw countless great bands, suffered from hangovers in the heat, danced like an idiot in pouring rain, made new friends, met old ones as if we never parted, and by my side the girl I love.
Fuck the commerce, Wacken, you rock!
Take thy beak from out my heart and take thy form from off my door! Quoth the woman: "Nevermore"
