Good Books

currently reading "The Wise Man's Fear " it is a pretty good book so far, a refreshing fantasy with a lack of misogyny for once.

I need some help and maybe some of you have read the book I am about to ask of:

Best summary: Adult Fantasy, kinda apocalyptic/fantasy landscape, magic has left the world but one little boy is born that has magic potential or something that might trigger the magic in the land, I think the little boy can't/won't talk or something. There are two evil mages who were exiled in defeat but are now searching for the little boy since magic is the source of their lost power. The boy of course gathers some friends and enemies along the way, as fits the theme maintained in most literature.

One guy he meets is a younger man who works, I believe, in some spice mines. Apparently eating the spice lets one enter a corporeal form and they can leave their body like a spirit and check shit out. Concerning the adult element, I mean that in every way. People are eating the spice and fucking on the side of the street, living life in a very Fallout looking landscape...apparently the war that exiled the mages ripped life from the land along with the magic.

If anyone knows a book like this, please let me know. I have been trying to find it for years with no title. I think it ended up being a series because I definitely remember the ending of the book, no way it could end there.

Started Karl May: The Son of the Bear Hunter. Old Shatterhand also appears in this book as some kind of dandy, but at least he has a bowie knife and his famous Bear Killer rifle.

The Hungarian translation of Umberto Eco's The Prague Cemetery is available at last! Awesome.

Book is pretty awesome right off the first few pages. I will probably finish it quickly. Excellent to find out the location of this battle, Kalkriese, is only 30-40 miles northwest of Münster, my ancestral lands. Wish I could find out that I am descended from a brutal barbarian who slayed some Romans. That would just be metal. Too bad the battle happened in A.D. 9.

Oh yeah, it's the infamous Battle of Teutoburg Forest where the Germans pwned a Roman Army of approx. 20,000.

Sounds like a book I want to read!
I'm going to live close to that area and it's also the land of my forefathers.
Unfortunately I completely missed the 2000 year anniversary of the Varusschlacht three years ago.

I will definitely visit Hermann.

@Gwywen: What city will you be living in? Apparently all Denkler's(my family name) come from some small town outside of Münster. I'll have to get the details when I get there. I can't wait. I might even research and write a paper on the history of that area as it pertains to Westphalia and Germania proper. The place is full of Universities. Tons of research material to dig endlessly through.

I haven't read the book, but I saw a documentary about the latest discoveries. Interesting topic indeed.
Finding your ancestors is exciting. I don't really know where to look for mine, but knowing myself I would say I'm descended from drunken peasants.
