Because here I know organisers have to pay 10 % of ticket sales to an author's rights organisation which is then supposed to give that money to the organisation in your country and they to you (OK, that's in theory, because metal bands here can't reach the buttom line to actually get the money). This also has to be paid if you play your own songs.

wot? thats a joke, istn't it? they charge you for playing your very own music? In germany we only have an organisation you register your music with, and if a third party makes commercial use of it they have to pay you through them. wich makes complete sense to me. unlike the law you were talking about.

It's not a joke :D They don't charge the band, they charge the organiser. Yes, even if the band plays their own music. The author (which is not always the same as the band) is supposed to get that money back if he's got enough of his work played over the year. Which is a rarity for a metal author, I suppose. And there's a whole bunch of other issues too.

But this is getting very off-topic. Either we open a new topic in general discussion or just leave it alone :)

Now, let's wait for Batnobbit to put the video of his band covering DIT here when it's done - YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!
One beer to rule them all.
One whiskey to find them.
One vodka to bring them all
and in the drunkness bind them!

Well, thanks. Now we are the band who got permission from Finntroll to play there song 8-)
And btw, yes we are a small band :P

The only time I've heard about repercussions for playing a cover in Sweden was when a nazi band played a song made by a famous musician. They might've gotten away with it if they hadn't changed the lyrics.

permission/fees is usually only something to worry about if you record it for sale-heck even Metallica let Beatallica do their stuff as long as it was a free DL.(i don't think the Beatles were even aware Beatallica existed)

I once recoreded a bo diddly cover, and we asked ascap for forms/fees etc,and it was more than the cost of the whole recording!
so we stuck it on there without mention on the sleeve as a "hidden"track.I'm fairly certain Trollhorn would not approve of this.
it's just another in a lifetime's worth of lessons never learned
